This list gives you the characters. Hanzio helps you learn them: every dictionary entry shows how common the character or word is, and the app helps you remember each one: its meaning, its pinyin and tones, how it sounds and how to write it.
Disclosure: we make Hanzio. The ranking comes from our own frequency data, explained below.
All 100, in order

Most of them live inside words
Only 19 of the 100 are usually a word on their own: 的, 我, 是, 了, 在, 你, 他, 和, 就, 说, 对, 也, 都, 去, 还, 想, 着, 很 and 而. The other 81 mostly appear as part of a longer word: 们 in 我们, 么 in 什么, 国 in 中国, 现 in 现在. Those are the ones to learn inside a word, because the word is what you will actually read.
Hanzio’s dictionary lets you tell the two kinds apart. Every entry shows how common it is, from 0 to 100, in up to three roles: as a word on its own, inside longer words, and as a component of other characters. 们, for example, is rarely a word by itself but very common inside 我们 and 他们.
How to learn them
- Learn them in common words. 们 is easiest as 我们, 你们 and 他们; 么 as 什么 and 怎么.
- Mind the ones with more than one reading. 16 of the 100 have one: 了 is le after a verb but liǎo in 了解; 得 is de in 说得好, dé “to get” and děi “must”. The table gives every reading the HSK 1 to 4 words use.
- Use HSK 1 as your first set. 71 of the 100 appear in the 300 words of the HSK 1 word list, so learning HSK 1 covers most of this list.
- Learn lookalikes in pairs. 人 and 大, 日 and 月: see the characters beginners mix up most.
Where the numbers come from
The ranking comes from Hanzio’s own frequency data, the same data as our post on how many Chinese characters there are and how many you need: 33 billion Han characters from large corpora of Chinese in spoken and written registers, weighted so that no single register dominates. Characters are counted as they occur in running text, inside longer words too, so each percentage is a share of the characters you actually meet. A character counts as on its own when it is a word by itself rather than part of a longer word. The counts are for simplified Chinese only.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common Chinese character?
的 (de), the particle that links a description or an owner to a noun, as in 我的, "my". It makes up about 3.5% of all Chinese text, roughly one character in every 29, well ahead of the next four: 我, 是, 了 and 不.
How many characters do I need to read Chinese?
About 1,000 characters cover 89% of the characters in everyday text, and 2,000 to 3,000 take you to 97-99%. The 100 on this page cover 40%. Comfortable reading also needs the words those characters spell out.
Are these the same in traditional Chinese?
No. This list is for simplified Chinese, and the traditional list is different: many of these characters are written differently in traditional Chinese (这 is 這, 个 is 個, 们 is 們).
Should I learn characters or words first?
Both, together. Characters are the smaller, reusable unit: these 100 cover 40% of what you read. But 81 of them usually appear inside longer words, and a word's meaning is often more than its characters (电 electricity + 脑 brain = 电脑, a computer), so learn each character inside a word you can use.
